There was a tiny bookshop tucked away on a quiet street near my grandad’s house, the kind you might walk past a hundred times without noticing, but to me, it was a world of its own. Every Saturday, after a morning of running errands, Grandad would take me there, pushing open the heavy wooden door with a soft creak. The moment we stepped inside, the scent wrapped around us, aged pages, warm vanilla, and something deep and familiar, like well-loved leather and a whisper of spice.

Grandad always let me roam free, knowing I’d eventually find my way to my favourite corner where the tall shelves smelled of patchouli and history, and the books, with their gold-embossed spines, felt like treasures waiting to be discovered. I’d run my fingers along the worn edges of the hardcovers, lifting them to my nose to breathe in that unmistakable scent, soft, powdery paper infused with time, warmed by the slightest trace of vanilla, like the caramelised sugar of the Bakery next door. Which one would I choose??

He never rushed me. He’d find a chair, settle in with a book of his own, and let me lose myself in the quiet magic of it all. The world outside faded, replaced by rustling pages, the low murmur of another reader at the till, the occasional clink of a teacup from the shopkeeper’s hidden kettle.

To ensure you enjoy your candle safely, always burn it within sight and keep it away from anything flammable, including curtains, furniture, and pets.

Trim the wick to 5mm before each use to prevent excessive flame or smoke, and allow the wax to melt across the full surface during the first burn to avoid tunnelling.

Never leave a burning candle unattended, and discontinue use when 10mm of wax remains.

Always place your candle on a heat-resistant surface, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
