My Memory
The rain had been relentless that afternoon, hammering down as we tried to pitch the tents, laughing at how hopelessly soaked we all were. Everything smelt of damp earth and wet leaves and a heaviness in the air. Then, just as suddenly as it began, the storm passed.
The forest fell still, the only sound the soft dripping of water from the trees. The air was fresh, tinged with wood and amber, carrying that indescribable scent that only comes after the storm. We huddled around a small camp stove, wrapped in blankets, sipping something strong and warming as the clouds broke and a shard of sunlight filtered through.
It was one of those moments, muddy boots, messy hair, cheeks sore from laughing when you realised the memory wasn’t in the storm itself, but in the calm and the friendships that followed.
