The Memory
Grandad’s snug is one of those memories that never fades. I can still smell it now, the second you walked in, the room wrapped around you like a hug. Warm, cosy, filled with the familiar mix of his aftershave, bright with bergamot and citrus, blending with the rich, spiced scent of the rum he kept on the shelf in that heavy glass bottle. He’d pour himself a small drop after dinner, the amber liquid glowing in the firelight as he sank into his battered old leather chair.
That chair was his throne, worn soft with age, carrying the scent of old books and pipe smoke. He’d lean back with a sigh, the fire crackling away, and I’d curl up on the rug right in front of the fire of course breathing in the earthy mix of patchouli and clove that clung to his favourite cardigan, you know, the one he always said he’d had “since before you were born.”
That little room made the rest of the world fade away. The steady tick of the old clock, the scent of moss and aged leather, the glow of the fire dancing on the walls. As the evening drifted on, the warm amber scent filled the room, rich and golden, like the last flickers of the fire before he finally shut his book and said, “Alright then, off to bed with you.”
